The percentage on a welcome banner is advertising. The wagering line is the job. Since 19 January 2026 a licensed British operator may not make you play through bonus funds more than ten times before those funds are withdrawable. Most of the internet did not get the memo. You will still see 30x, 35x, 40x, and the occasional 50x on rooms that do not hold a UK licence. Both numbers can be honest. Only one of them is a legal ceiling.
This is a working note for people who actually take bonuses. Not a hymn to 10x, and not a dare to chase 35x. It is the arithmetic the Gambling Commission wrote into Social Responsibility Code 5.1.1, the deposit-limit labels that became mandatory on 30 September 2026, and the five other lines that still void an offer after you have done the sum.
What 10x actually means in pounds
The Commission’s own example is still the cleanest. A £10 bonus with a 50x requirement used to mean £500 of turnover before you could take winnings from that bonus. At a 10x cap the same £10 needs £100 of qualifying play. The requirement counts stakes, win or lose. It is turnover, not a loss target. You can hit the number on a cold reel. You can also blow the bonus on the way there. The cap does not make the games fairer. It makes the distance shorter.
A Behavioural Insights Team trial the Commission cited found that seven in ten UK adults who gamble could not work out how much they would need to bet to clear a wagering requirement. Almost nine in ten failed when the requirement sat on bonus and deposit together. Three in five did not even notice a requirement at the point they chose the offer. That is why the cap exists. It is also why you should still do the sum yourself, because 10x on (bonus + deposit) is a different animal from 10x on the bonus alone.
Worked examples you can reuse:
- £20 bonus, 10x on the bonus only: £200 of qualifying stakes.
- £20 bonus, 10x on bonus and a £20 deposit: £400 of qualifying stakes.
- £100 match at 35x on the bonus only: £3,500 of qualifying stakes.
- £100 match at 35x on bonus and deposit: £7,000 of qualifying stakes.
Same 100% headline. Four different jobs. The room that prints “35x” without saying 35x what is not doing you a favour. On Cheetah Bonus we tag the base as bonus, deposit, or both. Open the calculator on a deposit-match card when you see it — it uses that bonus’s own wagering rules, not a generic slots guess.
Licensees must not apply wagering requirements, which require a customer to play through bonus funds, over a maximum of 10 times. A wagering requirement is where a customer is required to make wagers totalling a particular value for funds to become withdrawable.
That is LCCP SR 5.1.1, in force 19 January 2026. The same clause bans mixing product types inside one incentive: you should not be asked to bet on football to unlock slot spins in a single packaged offer. A bonus you can spend on any product you choose is a different construction. Read which one you were given.
35x is not illegal. It is a different shop.
The 10x cap binds UK-licensed operators. It does not rewrite a Curacao, Kahnawake, or unlicensed lobby. A 35x free-spin package on an offshore room can still be a real exclusive. We published one last week: GoldPrize’s 50 spins on Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde at 35x, with a $100 winning cap. That is a short, capped look at a 3.4-rated room, not a British welcome. Treat it as such.
The mistake is converting the headline. People see 35x and think “a bit more than 10x.” On a $100 match that is not a bit. It is thousands of extra turnover, and game weighting can make it worse. If you play from Britain, a UK-licensed 10x offer is the legal product. If you play elsewhere, 35x is common. Compare it with the 25x list and no-wagering bonuses before you decide the extra multiple is worth the extra banner.
The five lines that still kill a 10x bonus
A low multiple does not save you from a bad term. Check these in order, every time.
1. The base. Bonus only, deposit only, or both. If the terms say “35x (B+D)” and the banner says “35x,” the banner lied by omission. Do the larger sum.
2. Game weighting. Slots often contribute 100%. Many tables contribute 10% or 0%. A 10x bonus cleared on blackjack at 10% weighting is actually 100x of real blackjack turnover. Live roulette with a 0% contribution never moves the bar. If you came to play tables, a “low wagering slot bonus” is the wrong tool. Look at the game page you actually want, starting from slots if that is the weighted game, and ignore the bonus if the weighting is a trap.
3. Max bet while the bonus is active. A $5 or £5 cap is common. Go over it and the room can void the lot. High-volatility slots make this easy to trip because the stake feels small next to the reel. The GoldPrize exclusive last week capped the bet at $5 and the winnings at $100. Both numbers matter more than the 50-spin count.
4. Time. Seven days, three days, 24 hours. A 10x offer that expires tomorrow on a slow slot is tighter than a 25x offer with a month on the clock. Free spins that die in 72 hours are a session, not a project.
5. The winning cap. Especially on free spins. You can clear the wagering and still be clipped. If the cap is $100 and the minimum withdrawal at that casino is also $100, you need a clean hit plus whatever else sits in the balance. Read the cashier floor on the review, not in chat after the feature.
Germany is a reminder that product rules and bonus rules are not the same file. The GGL stake cap on slots is a spin-size rule, not a wagering cap. We covered the live €5 change separately. You can be inside the German stake cap and still be stuck on 35x at a room that is not in that market.
Deposit limits now have a legal meaning
From 30 September 2026, UK remote operators must offer gross deposit limits — a cap on how much you put into the account over a period — and they may only call that tool a “deposit limit.” Other tools can exist. They cannot steal the name. The periods on offer must include 24 hours, 7 days, and one month. If you set a £10 day limit and a £100 week limit, the tighter one wins: £10 a day, which also means you never reach £100 in that week.
You must be able to type the amount, not only pick from a dropdown. Raising a limit sits behind a cooling-off period. Hitting the limit should stop further deposits until the window resets. This is RTS 12, not a kindness. Use it. A 10x bonus on an account with no deposit limit is still an account that can be reloaded.
Net “spend” limits and stake limits are different instruments. If the page still says “deposit limit” for a tool that only counts losses, that labelling is the thing the Commission spent 2026 cleaning up. Ask which number actually blocks the cashier.
A one-screen checklist before you opt in
- Which licence am I actually under? UK 10x is a ceiling, not a style.
- Is the multiple on B, D, or B+D? Write the turnover in one line.
- Which games pay 100% toward that turnover? If it is not the game you came to play, skip the offer.
- Max bet, time limit, winning cap. Any one of those can be tighter than the multiple.
- Is a gross deposit limit set for 24 hours and 7 days, in a number you typed yourself?
- Does the minimum withdrawal sit above what this bonus can reasonably produce?
If you cannot answer those six from the terms and the review, you do not have an offer. You have a banner. The casino list is the front door; the bonus is optional decoration.
What this is not
It is not advice to leave a UK licence for a fatter multiple. Displacement to unlicensed sites was one reason the Commission picked 10x instead of banning wagering altogether. A 35x room can still be a poor room. A 10x room can still bury the weighting. Score, payout speed, and whether we have marked the casino as a problem are still the review. The multiple is just the length of the job.
Play only with a bankroll you can lose. You need to be 18 or older, and you need to be somewhere the casino is allowed to take you. If the session stops being entertainment, close the cashier. The bonus is optional. The stop is not.
